Julie Cooper-Fratrik’s luminous poems in The Slow Separations achieve, at once, a marvelous density—a textured specificity of time and place—of a hovering thoughtfulness that muses on the sentience lending its aura to all things. There are miracles here: a monologue by the stone that weighed Virginia Woolf to her death; a cat “anxious for the idea of catbird / to become nourishment”; of Alicia Ostriker, reading from her work “You capture us like bell crickets inside / the paper lanterns of your words.” Of Cooper-Fratrik’s metaphors, we can say, with Bachelard, The poetic image is a sudden salience on the surface of the psyche, so arrestingly and easily do they enter into us. Her themes, the f/actuality of everyday life; of family; of nature; and above all, of consciousness, are captured—no; more: honored here in perceptions of such freshness that the reader’s breath is halted, halted and suspended, then allowed to resume with an intake of joy. She is rich in poetic family: Woolf, of course, Stevens, Dickinson, Frost, Neruda, Rilke. The voice—always hers. This is a poet who is fully arrived. Michener Memorial Prize At the core of these poems is a reverence for the “invisible life” found in the convergence of the real and imagined, the present and past, the voice and voiceless: “the rift between things/and their impressions.” Here, in a landscape that moves back and forth from the domestic world to the natural world, to Woolf, to war, to hunger, what unfolds is a dreamscape where things dissolve—“I watch from the window your fleeting shadow/move soundlessly inside the greenhouse walls,”—only to reappear and, in their return, are transformed “between the interstices / of silence.” Within these carefully observed, transcendent “whisper songs” there is a deep stillness and attention to the mystery and “careful tending to life.” Listen carefully.
